Is the Osprey Farpoint 40 waterproof?

The Osprey Farpoint 40 is not waterproof. It is however water-resistant which means water that is splash on it will roll-off. How can I waterproof my backpack?

Here's a short list of ways I protect my backpack contents from water.

· Ziplock bags. I put everything I can in these. I really like the gallon size because you can put a lot of small clothes in them.

· Plastic cling wrap. Line your backpack with the kitchen product that sticks to itself.

  • Kiwi Camp Dry water repellent. It’s a little smelly but works great.

  • Backpack rain cover. Like I mentioned earlier you can buy a rain cover for your backpack.Remember the rain cover will help to protect the backpack contents during heavy rain, it will not keep water out of the backpack if submerged in a lake or stream.

  • Garbage bags. Garbage bags are great for larger items like your jeans or long sleeve shirts. Use a zip tie to close them.

  • Backpack liners. Like the backpack rain cover, you can buy a waterproof insert for your backpack. Just be sure to buy one a little larger than the backpack. It helps with packing.

· Check for anything that may be missed.

Note: Always read your backpack manufacturer's care guide first before cleaning just in case they do not recommend these steps.

Washing your backpack in a washing machine will clean the fabric but what about the zippers?

How to clean backpack zippers.

Start with soap and water. Use Dawn dishwashing liquid and tap water. A teaspoon of Dawn mixed with a quart of water. Use a cotton cloth or sponge after it has been saturated by the soap and water to thoroughly clean what maybe leaf after the cleaning in the washing machine. You are looking for anything caked on the zipper teeth that would affect the zipper movement.

Next, rinse off all the soap with clean water after cleaning. Don’t be afraid to run the zipper under the facet to thoroughly remove the soap.

Then let the zippers air dry.

Then lubricate the zippers. You can use crayons, candle wax, or powdered graphite to keep the zippers working smoothly. I would discourage oil-based products as they can stain the fabric and collect dust and dirt which will corrode the teeth and affect their ability to close together.

Is the Osprey Farpoint 40 backpack fireproof?

There is no information from the manufacturer that indicates the Osprey Farpoint 40 is fireproof and I don’t know of any backpacks that are. Many are flame retardants. You can purchase flame retardant sprays for fabric but be sure to read both the manufacturer's information on the backpack and the flame retardant’s manufacturer's recommendation for application just to make sure the spay does not damage the backpack and will actually provide some level of flame retardancy.

All the best,
